"I had been on a ventilator and not able to
talk for several weeks. When the RT put the Passy-Muir
Valve (PMV) on me and said 'Talk to us, Mrs. Little,'
I was so afraid. I didn't know how I would sound.
I finally said my daughter's name. I started coughing
and the therapist said when I get used to using the
valve I wouldn't cough anymore. I prayed hard and
by the third day I was talking to everybody on the
phone. I was so happy! Just to be able to talk again
put so much joy in my heart. At the same time, my
husband was also in the hospital. By having the PMV,
I was able to talk with him for the last time, the
day before he died. The PMV is so essential to me
and has made it possible for me to communicate with
my friends and family again. I thank David Muir for
inventing the PMV and making it possible for ventilator
patients to talk."
