7. My tracheostomy tube does not have a 15mm hub to attach the
PMV. What do I do?
Plastic Tracheostomy Tube - If you have a plastic tracheostomy tube, make
sure that the inner cannula is in place. There are some plastic tubes that must
have the inner cannula in place in order to have a 15mm hub. Some plastic
tracheostomy tubes come in a low-profile model. If you have a low-profile
model, it usually comes with a second inner cannula that has a 15mm hub. Remove
the low-profile inner cannula and replace it with the inner cannula that has
the 15mm hub.
Metal Trachestomy Tube - If you have a Pilling Weck Improved or Premier
Medical metal tube in a size 4, 5, or 6, the PMV
2020 Tracheostomy Speaking Valve with
PMA 2020-S adapter can be used. This Pilling Weck tube is unique from
the original metal tubes because it has a small hub (about 1/2 cm) that is
attached to the inner cannula.
If the metal tracheostomy tube you have is not a Pilling Weck Improved or
Premier Medical in a size 4-6, then an endotracheal tube (ETT) adapter sized to fit
your tracheostomy tube can be used to create a 15mm hub. Once the 15mm hub is
in place you need to place a PMV other than the PMV 2020. Below is a list of
reasons why you would need to utilize an ETT adapter:
-
You have an original metal tracheostomy tube (the inner cannula is flush with
the neckline).
-
You have an improved metal tracheostomy tube in a size larger than 6.
-
You have an improved metal tracheostomy tube, but it is not a Premier Medical or
Pilling Weck brand tube.
