9. Why is a doctor's prescription needed to obtain a PMV™?

The PMV's are devices regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and require a prescription. It is important that your airway status be evaluated carefully by a doctor to make sure that you have a properly sized tracheostomy tube, no significant blockage of the airway and/or that no other conditions exist that would keep you from being able to use the PMV safely. A doctor's order is required in obtaining reimbursement from Medicare, MediCal, Medicaid or private insurance.
