Sending PMVs to Iraq, Part 1


The Major and deans/doctors from the medical school in Mosul, Iraq hold the Passy-Muir valves.

Recently, Passy-Muir received an email from a U.S. Army Major deployed in Iraq. He was involved with a project to help the local community in the northern city of Mosul. He informed us that a highly regarded member of the community, a professor at a medical school, was suffering from motor neuron disease with respiratory failure. A portable ventilator had already been purchased for the professor, and they were interested in obtaining a Passy-Muir Tracheostomy and Ventilator Speaking Valve.

Eager to help, Passy-Muir thoroughly explored the possibilities for sending valves to Mosul. Because the area was still considered a combat zone, services such as DHL and FedEx were not available, and the U.S. Postal Service was our best option. According to the Major, two and a half weeks was about average for a package to reach Mosul from the States, so we sent out the valves and hoped for the best.
