{"id":11275,"date":"2019-02-13T15:04:20","date_gmt":"2019-02-13T23:04:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.passy-muir.com\/?page_id=11275"},"modified":"2019-03-18T09:00:11","modified_gmt":"2019-03-18T16:00:11","slug":"tracheostomy-glossary","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.passy-muir.com\/es\/tracheostomy-glossary\/","title":{"rendered":"Tracheostomy Glossary for Patients, Family, and Friends"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"l2-header-con no-banner\">\n<div class=\"l2-header-icon\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\"  src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Trach-Tube-Icon.jpg\" alt=\"trach tube\" \/>\n\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"l2-header-text\">\n\t\t\t\tTracheostomy Glossary\n                         <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Aspiration:<\/strong> Inhalation of any foreign matter, such as food, drink, saliva, or stomach contents (as after vomiting) into the airway below the level of the vocal cords. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Cuff:<\/strong> An inflatable balloon-like structure that is shaped like a doughnut which wraps around the trach tube, preventing the leakage of air, especially during mechanical ventilation (see below)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cuff Deflation:<\/strong> The act of removing air from the cuff of a tracheostomy tube.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diaphragm:<\/strong> A thin, dome-shaped muscle, important in breathing. Separates stomach and chest cavities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Endotracheal tube:<\/strong> A long, straight tube that connects to a ventilator and is placed in the throat, passing between the vocal cords (not to be confused with a tracheostomy tube)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hub (15mm):<\/strong> The part of the tracheostomy tube that adapts to standard respiratory equipment, such as a ventilator.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Humidifier:<\/strong> a device that provides moisture to the air we breathe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Larynx:<\/strong> A structure in the airway also known as the \u201cvoice box\u201d that contains the vocal cords and also prevents food from entering the trachea during swallow<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lower Airway:<\/strong> That portion of the respiratory tract beginning at the larynx (voice box) and ending at the smallest units in the lungs. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Peak Inspiratory Pressure (PIP):<\/strong> A measurement of pressure in the lungs at the end of the inspiratory phase of ventilation. It is reflected on the airway pressure manometer of the ventilator.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pilot Balloon:<\/strong> Plastic sack-like component connected to the inflation line and luer valve of the tracheostomy tube which allows for inflation and deflation of the cuff.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Closed Position \u201cNo Leak\u201d:<\/strong> Design pertaining to the PMV. The PMV opens on inhalation and automatically closes at the end of inhalation. It remains closed without air leak during exhalation. This restores a closed respiratory system and a more normal breathing pattern to the PMV user.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pulse Oximeter:<\/strong> Device which measures the oxygen saturation level of arterial blood when placed on finger, toe, or ear. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Secretions:<\/strong> Saliva and other materials that accumulate in the airway and are normally coughed up and spit out or swallowed in healthy people<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaking Valve:<\/strong> A device that fits on the hub and directs air from the lungs, around the trach tube, and out the nose and mouth allowing for speech, swallow, smell, and more<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stoma:<\/strong> A generic medical term meaning \u201cmouth\u201d or \u201chole\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Suction:<\/strong> Removal of gas or fluid (secretions) by mechanical means.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trachea:<\/strong> The part of the airway below the larynx and above the bronchi and lungs where a tracheostomy tube is placed<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tracheostomy:<\/strong> An artificial opening in the trachea that facilitates the passage of air and removal of secretions. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Tracheotomy:<\/strong> A procedure performed to create a hole in the trachea, located at the front of the neck, for breathing and ventilation<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mechanical Ventilator:<\/strong> A machine that pushes air into a patient\u2019s lungs using ventilator tubing<\/p>\n<p><strong>Upper Airway:<\/strong> That portion of the respiratory tract beginning at the mouth and nose and ending at the larynx (voice box).<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Tracheostomy Glossary Aspiration: Inhalation of any foreign matter, such as food, drink, saliva, or stomach contents (as after vomiting) into the airway below the level of the vocal cords.
