Overview

Workshops:
Workshops are special courses that provide more intensive learning on specific topics related to the care of patients with tracheostomies and who are to be assessed for Passy-Muir Valve use. These 3-hour courses focus on a particular topic, including mechanical ventilation, ethics, and considerations for complex diagnoses. They cover these topics in depth and present research that supports any guidance or recommendations provided in the workshop. These courses are provided by Clinical Specialists in respiratory therapy or speech-language pathology. Our live workshops are interactive and allow time for Q&A. They will also be available in a recorded format for the holiday season (Nov 6 – Dec 31).

Promoting a multidisciplinary approach, the workshops provide:

  • Steps and strategies for assessing use of the no-leak bias-closed position Valve
  • Discussions about patients both with and without mechanical ventilation
  • Techniques for improving communication, swallowing, and secretion management; restoring pressures and voicing; and enhancing quality of life
  • Assessment and placement criteria for Valve use

The workshops are provided in both a live and recorded format, as noted. Be sure to read the course description to see what specifically is covered in each course. Go to the corresponding tab for workshops or seminars and select your choice(s). Click on “register” to go to a separate page to allow you to register and pay for your course(s). Courses are offered through a third-party platform.

Workshops

Recorded versions of the workshops will be available to view 2-3 days after it’s presented live.

Multiple Diagnoses: Managing Communication and Swallowing in Patients With Trach Tubes
November 3 | 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM ET/ 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM PT
This workshop reviews communication and swallowing interventions for patients with tracheostomy tubes with considerations for specific diagnoses, such as traumatic brain injury, head and neck cancer, lung transplant, inhalation burn injury, and spinal cord injury. Patient videos and case studies are used to discuss interventions for different patient populations.

Home for the Holidays: Considerations for No-Leak Valve Use with Patients at Home
November 6 | 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM ET/ 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM PT
This workshop covers considerations for using no-leak speaking Valves with patients with tracheostomies and mechanical ventilation who have returned home. Speakers will discuss equipment, assessment, patient and family education, interprofessional communication, and barriers with strategies to enhance care.

Maybe There’s Another Way: Ethical Guidance to Dispel Misinformation Affecting Patient Care
November 11 | 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM ET/ 7:00 AM – 10:00 AM PT
This workshop explores some of the misinformation surrounding management of patients with tracheostomies and mechanical ventilation, use of no-leak speaking Valves, and daily clinical practice that may delay or inhibit appropriate patient care. Speakers address these barriers with evidence-based research and ethical considerations.

*This course does not meet the California ethics requirement for RTs but does count as continuing education hours (it is registered for Ethics with AARC and ASHA).

Under Pressure: Why a Tracheostomy Impacts Swallowing, Voice, Mobility, and More (2 hours)
November 13 | 3:00 PM -6:00 PM ET/ 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM PT
This workshop presents an overview of the impact an open tracheostomy has on the pressurized systems in the human body for both pediatrics and adults. It includes a review of pressure and how it interplays with functions, such as swallowing, voice, trunk support, and mobility; then, it reviews how these systems may be negatively impacted by the tracheostomy. Assessment and treatment considerations are discussed.

Anatomy and Physiology of Respiration and the Interplay with Swallowing and Communication
November 15 | 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM ET/ 7:00 AM – 10:00 AM PT
This workshop addresses how we must breathe first, then eat and talk. It reviews how breathing, swallowing, and communicating work together and how to “fix it” when something goes wrong. This workshop explores the structure and function of the aerodigestive and communication systems, emphasizing their interdependence in supporting effective ventilation, swallowing, and communication. Participants will gain foundational knowledge of relevant anatomy and physiology, followed by an overview of evidence-based treatment strategies aimed at enhancing swallow safety and efficiency, as well as improving breath support for both ventilation and speech.

In-Line PMV Placement: Case-Based Application in Pediatric and Adult Ventilated Patients
November 17 | 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM ET/ 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM PT)
This workshop provides in-depth review of ventilator management and troubleshooting through both pediatric and adult case studies. During this course, assessment, treatment, and troubleshooting considerations will be reviewed. Four primary case studies with guidance through patient videos will be used to demonstrate and teach concepts for best practice.
